Zombieland

Zombieland

A brilliant blend of gags, gore, guns and girl-friendly gooey bits, this is an American Shaun Of The Dead. It may even be funnier. Woody Harrelson’s hard-drinking zombie-slayer and Jesse Eisenberg’s lonely geek are an inspired comedy duo, while Emma Stone is superb as street-wise Wichita. Throw in Bill Murray’s cameo and you get not only this year’s best zombie film, but also one of 2009’s funniest movies.

Up
A touching and funny 3D tale of Carl, a 78-year-old widower, who escapes to the mythical worlds of South America using thousands of balloons and the help of an eight-year-old stowaway named Russell. It’s not your usual Pixar offering, but it’s visually amazing and surprisingly exciting.

Looking For Eric
(DVD, Blu-Ray) Unsurprisingly, ex-Old Trafford hero Eric Cantona steals the show as the imaginary mentor of a deadbeat postman who suffers panic attacks, smokes too much pot and can’t deal with his stepsons. Director Ken Loach’s films are usually angst-ridden and ultra-gritty, and while this explodes into violent life towards the end, it’s actually a nice, gently funny Sunday afternoon movie.

Chuck Season 2
(DVD) The nerd-by-day, secret agent-by-night set-up gets a little tired, but this hit US series does contain some decent twists and a roster of very hot ladies.

Heroes Season 3
(DVD, Blu-ray) Textbook return-to-form which almost crams in too much action and too many time-jumping storylines. Well worth rejoining, though.
