Movie Reviews: Surrogates!

SurrogatesSurrogates
Smart sci-fi with Bruce Willis, set in a world where humans don’t leave the comfort of their houses, instead relying on remote controlled robots to communicate with each other. Willis is FBI agent Greer, who’s investigating the first murder in years and is forced to venture into the outside world, enlisting his own “Surrogate” to help out. Our only complaint? It’s set in 2017. That’s just eight years from now.

The Soloist
Jamie Foxx plays a musical prodigy who develops schizophrenia and is left homeless. Robert Downey Jr is the journalist who discovers him and tries to help, while reviving his failing career at the same time. It’s deep, life-lesson type stuff that will mostly leave you cold.

FringeFringe
(DVD, Blu-ray) From its slow, “Isn’t this basically The X Files?” start, Fringe became one of the most surprising and compulsive shows on TV. The set-up goes like this: an FBI agent, a mad scientist and his super-smart son investigate paranormal incidents that all seem to be linked, using “fringe science”. John Noble is the highlight as the crazy genius, but he’s ably supported by Joshua Jackson’s wisecracks.

The Simpsons Season 12
(DVD, Blu-ray) The first series where you can see the quality dropping, but it still contains some classics, including the one where Homer becomes smart.

An American Werewolf In London
(Blu-ray) A re-release for the comedy horror classic. The effects are equal to today’s CGI, and it’s both scary and fun.
