The List

Movies: Spinal Tap and District 9!
District 9
This cost just £18.3m to make, but you won’t believe it when you see the quality of the CGI. Aliens (or “prawns”) arrive on Earth and are forced to live in a shanty town. Twenty-seven years later, field operative Wikus van de Merwe is given the job of evicting them, but gets sprayed by a weird liquid and his DNA starts changing. Good, but goes for cheap laughs which dilutes the atmosphere.

500 Days Of Summer
At last, after The Ugly Truth and too many other turgid rom-coms to mention, someone takes a stab at making one that’s aimed at guys. Smart and classy, though it’s still probably not a movie you’d shout about seeing down the pub like you would with Inglourious Basterds. At least, not until everyone else catches on.

This Is Spinal Tap: 25th Anniversary Edition
(DVD, Blu-ray) This is Ricky Gervais’ favourite movie. A spoof documentary so perfect that early reviewers in the 1980s were initially fooled into thinking it was about a real rock band – and actual musicians thought it was secretly about them. Fading heavy metal band Spinal Tap go on a disastrous tour of the US to promote their new album, the outrageously titled Smell The Glove.

Gladiator
(Blu-ray) The first truly great movie of this millennium. Russell Crowe’s journey of revenge from Roman general to gladiator looks amazing in this new HD transfer.

Dollhouse: Season 1
(DVD) Sci-fi series with Eliza Dushku as a military “doll” – her mind is wiped and she’s given a new personality for each mission. Starts slowly, gets better.
