Music Review: Joe Lean

What's the story? So, they've got music's most annoying name, a distant relation of sex-obsessed psychologist Sigmund Freud as a frontman (who's also acted in Peep Show) and they might just be the most precocious smartypantses in rock. Yet, despite all this, we've had their first three singles on repeat and been gagging to run the rule over one of the year's most eagerly-anticipated debuts.

Any good? If their cockiness in person is irritating, on record, it's thrilling. The surf-rock guitars swoop and soar like an updated Smiths, with Lean's dramatic, yelpy vocals lending a dollop of excitement to each song. Admittedly it's a choppy, unrelenting formula that's stuck to resolutely, with little change of pace until sombre closer Adelaide. But it establishes JLATJJJ (nope, still annoying) as maybe the single most exciting band of the moment.
