Review: Beck - Modern Guilt

What’s the story? Few artists surf genres with the skill of Beck Hansen. Since emerging in the early ’90s, his prolific output has taken on everything from Prince-style funk to meloncholic folk. And the hits far outweight the misses. For his eighth LP, the indie oddball has hooked up with Gnarls Barkley co-founder Danger Mouse and expectations couldn’t be higher.

Any good? For a notorious one-man musical maverick, it’s surprising how well Beck collaborates. While containing all his leftfield pop quality, this has DM’s paw-prints all over it. The woozy, ’60s psychedelia, rapid-fire drumming and grinding basslines find a very happy home alongside Beck’s haunting vocals and subtly mesmerising melodies. Arguably the best work of either’s career.
