Andy Murray: 'I’m Like David Brent'

Andy, how will it feel to be Britain’s most famous man for the next fortnight?
I don’t think of it like that. The support you get as a Brit playing at Wimbledon is fantastic – but I don’t reckon I’m the country’s most famous man or anything like that! You have to stay so focused for the two weeks, because if you don’t, you are going to get knocked out. It really is as simple as that.
How big a Wimbledon fan are you? Do you like: A) Strawberries and cream? B) Union Jack hats? C) The music of Cliff Richard?
Ha ha. It wouldn’t be Wimbledon without all of them, would it? So I’ll have to say all three!
By winning the Queen’s tournament earlier this month, have you increased the pressure on yourself?
I don’t think so. Winning before a major tournament can only be a good thing for confidence and fitness. My body held out well at Queen’s and that was a big thing for me just before Wimbledon.
Roger Federer is favourite for the title. Is he the greatest player ever?
His record speaks for itself and, for me, he has to be the best all-round tennis player ever. I think Pete Sampras is the best grass court player there’s ever been, though. You can’t really argue with seven Wimbledon singles titles. Of course, Roger does have time to beat that…
Your brother Jamie is the last British male to win a title [mixed doubles, 2007] at Wimbledon. Is that a record you want to break?
If I break that record, it means I’ve won Wimbledon – so of course it’s a record I want to break!
You and Jamie are flat-sharing in SW19 – but who cooks, who cleans, and who wins on the Xbox?
I’m not sure there will be any cooking or cleaning going on during Wimbledon – you have to be so careful with what you eat and let your body recover properly for the next match. You get very little spare time, but we might play a little Xbox or watch movies.
Have you watched the film Wimbledon for inspiration? And do you have certain DVDs to get you in the mood?
Funnily enough, I’ve never watched that film for inspiration! But I love The Office to chill me out. I wouldn’t say it gets me in the mood for a match, but it still cracks me up to this day. I do drop David Brent-like sayings into my daily speech.
During the tournament, do you socialise with the other players?
No – you have no time. It’s train, play, let your body rest and so on. Everybody on the circuit is pretty cool, but there’s no time to socialise. World No4 Novak Djokovic is the resident impersonator.
Can he do an impression of you? And vice versa?
Everybody can do an impression of a Scotsman! It must be the easiest one around. Unfortunately, I’m not very good at impressions.
But we’ve seen your ball-juggling skills. Are you the best footballer on the tennis tour?
Probably. My granddad was a pro footballer, so it must be in the blood. Rafa Nadal likes his football, though – he’s pretty good, too! I bet he loves it at the moment with all the players his team Real Madrid are signing!
