Bentley: 'Harry's Made Us Believe!'
ALL CHANGE AT THE LANE...
I've been a bit gloomy in recent weeks but things are finally looking up. When I was dropped for the game at Udinese, I felt like retiring. I was packing in football and moving to a remote island! Not now. Now I want to play forever!
I'm not going to have a go at Mr Ramos because he's a quality coach. You don't win two Uefa Cups if you're not. There are many reasons why we started the season so badly.
The club and the squad were at an all-time low flying back from Italy. But now we have a new man - Harry Redknapp - in charge, who has given us all a major lift. He's backed us, backed the club, addressed the fans and appreciates the heart and soul of the place.
On the Saturday evening before the Bolton match, chairman Daniel Levy called everyone in for a meeting and told us what was happening. It was obvious that things weren't going well for me and the team. While we all know there's plenty of hard graft to be done, the whole squad is buzzing with the new manager.
HELLO 'ARRY!
When we were told that Harry Redknapp was the new gaffer, I was ecstatic. I'd never met him but I'd only heard good things from players who had. Everything I'd been told was spot on. He breezed in and had a word with everyone. All week, he's been telling us how good we are and telling us to believe in ourselves and our ability.
I get emotional about football and I struggle to go out and just be mechanical. I need passion from my boss and in Harry I'm getting that. He's my type of bloke and manager - and I can tell you I'm not alone in that in the Spurs dressing room. The response to his appointment has been brilliant.
Harry's team-talks are amazing! Just look at the Bolton game - we had an added spring in our step. That was because of Harry. That's what great managers do - they make things simple and make the players feel like
world-beaters. He has man-management skills that are second to none.
Our game has got bogged down by new scientific methods, so it's blinding to be working with an old-school football man. Don't get me wrong - in training, the gaffer is on it. He organises, is professional and concentrates on the shape of the side. He's a straight-talker and tells all the players exactly what he expects. But, at the same time, he's a manager who reminds you to go out and enjoy playing the game we love so much.
MY WONDER GOAL!
Last week, we ran out at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium having been told by Harry that we were good enough to get a result. We had belief and - against a great Arsenal team - fought back to get an incredible 4-4 draw! A couple of weeks ago, we'd have crumbled and lost 6-1.
My goal was an amazing moment and the coaching staff must take some credit. Both Kevin Bond and Clive Allen had said before the game they'd noticed Gunners goalkeeper Manuel Almunia likes to stray to the edge of his box. The ball came to me in a packed midfield, sat up nice and those words just popped into my head. I thought, "Sod it, I'm having a go!" It felt good as I hit it, it sailed in and I was off to the fans like a madman! Dream stuff. I can't think of a better moment in my whole career.
The end of the match was a fairytale, too. We were 4-2 down in the last minute and to get back to 4-4 - what's that about? Arsenal fans had been giving me loads of stick. ‘Bentley, Bentley, what's the score?' and all that. That's why, when Aaron Lennon equalised and the final whistle went, I got a bit carried away! It had been an emotional week.
PUB FACT: Harry Redknapp has a win ratio of 39.15 percent from his magagerial career.
