Rooney: 'I Watch Myself On TV!'

Rooney: 'I Watch Myself On TV!'The man with English football's most closely shaven barnet explains why he loves seeing himself on the box.

Congratulations on your recent goal rush, Wayne! What's the secret?
I'm a confident person. I work on my finishing every day and I always believe I'm going to score when I go out on the pitch. As a result, goals are going in for me, which is good for Manchester United and England.

Can you tell us what's changed at international level?
I don't know, but I hope it can continue and England can go on and win major trophies now. Everyone remembers Euro 2004 because I scored goals. I played well in that tournament but, since then, I've improved and played even better.

What are the differences between Wayne Rooney the teenager at Euro 2004 and the player you are today?
In those days, I was used to playing the way Everton did - and we didn't have as much of the ball. When we did get the ball, we'd try to do something with it quickly. When you sign for a new club, you adapt. With Man United and England, you have a lot more possession and can think about where you're going to run or play the ball. That's certainly helped the way I play.

Do you study your own performances?
I watch all the games back on TV, whether they're on Sky Sports or MUTV. And there are times when I've played well but, because I haven't scored, I've been criticised. I'm not too worried about what people say though because, as a forward, if you don't score, you always expect to get that.

Is the criticism unfair?
Maybe, sometimes it's been fair. And I am self-critical. When I've not played well, I'm very disappointed. As a striker, you don't want to go too deeply into things. But I also think it's natural that if you're not getting the ball, you'll go looking for it.

Some would say that you've been too versatile for your own good...
At Man United especially, I've been used in different roles. But I have no real complaints. Obviously, if we don't play well and don't win, it's a bigger problem.

Has playing with Emile Heskey for England helped your game?
I like playing behind another forward because I get on the ball more. I don't like to be out of the game too long. Some strikers hardly touch the ball during a game and just look to score goals. I don't enjoy doing that. I like to get on the ball and be involved.

Can Dimitar Berbatov do the same for you at Old Trafford?
Maybe Berba being at Man United will bring some continuity to my game. With me and Carlos Tevez, neither of us like to stay up front. We tend to move around a lot, whereas Berba will stay further forward. It's similar to the England situation, so it could make a difference.

And it means more competition for places, too...
The fact that Berba has been brought in means that me and Tevez have to play well to stay in the team. We're not guaranteed a place in the side any more. Hopefully, that'll take me and Carlos on to another level and make us play even better!

PUB FACT: Wayne Rooney's scored more competitive England goals in the last year than he did in the previous four years.
