Le Tissier Talks Soccer Saturday

matthew-le-tissier_167.jpgSouthampton legend Matthew Le Tissier takes time out of the Soccer Saturday tour to talk about the cult show and his just as legendary co-panelists...

What time do you arrive at the Soccer Saturday studio's on a Saturday?
11am, we usually have a chat and put our bets on before the show kicks off.

Do you get to choose which game you commentate on?
No, we get designated a game. Sometimes we don't like the game we get, ‘coz we know its going to be crap, but we have to watch it.

Apart from Southampton, which team do you look out for?
Anyone who I've got money on! Or Hartlepool, because that's Jeff's team.

Who's your favourite player in the world right now?

Lionel Messi

And what about your favourite player of all time?
Pele

You scored a couple of crackers in your time. What goal always goes on at Christmas in the Le Tissier household?
The goal I scored against Blackburn at Ewood Park is my favourite. Mainly because it was from about 35 yards but also because my good friend Tim Flowers was in goal, which made it even more special!!

What's your favourite thing about being on Soccer Saturday?
Winning the Soccer Saturday accumulator! Which happens about once a season, if we're lucky! Five of us stick £20 in each and pick a team each, if someone's team starts losing, you can imagine the abuse they get.

What's the hardest or most awkward question you've ever been asked?
When I was working for the F.A. after the England vs Croatia game, a journalist asked, "What do you think Steve McLaren should do now?" As I was working for, and getting paid by, the F.A. that night, what I really wanted to say would have maybe compromised my pay for that evening. But I got out of it well!

What did you say?
I said, "Hypothetically, if I was in Steve McLaren's position, I would say, thanks very much, I wasn't good enough, I'll walk away."

Have you ever considered going into football management?
Once very briefly considered it when Harry Redknapp left the Saints. It's never been an ambition of mine. Saints were in a bad way, so I kind of half offered my services. I don't like coaching.

Do you, have banter with the guys on the panel off camera or, go for a beer afterwards?

Yea, definitely. We can swear then as well, and it gets a bit more abusive!

Are you looking forward to the forthcoming roadshows?
Definitely. I really enjoy the after dinner circuit and the roadshow is going to be great as Jeff Stelling and Paul Merson are also very entertaining and we have never worked like this before.

| Matthew Le Tissier will be appearing in Kettering alongside Sky Sports Soccer Saturady pundits Jeff Stelling and Paul Merson. For more info on the Soccer Saturday tour or to book tickets visit www.bmtevents.co.uk.
