Lampard: 'We Must Win!'
Posted in Interviews | 10 months ago
England face Andorra this weekend. What can you tell us about the place? Not a lot, really! We faced them in the Euro 2008 qualifiers but you only really get to see the training facilities, the hotel and the stadium. I haven't been on any sightseeing tours or anything!
This game is being played in Barcelona, where your other half, Elen Rives, hails from. Has she any Andorran-Catalan bias?
Ha ha! No, she knows what side her bread's buttered!
The all-time England vs Andorra aggregate stands at 8-0. There's no excuse to concede a goal, let alone not win, right?
Obviously it's nice to keep a clean sheet but, in any match, the main target has to be to win and get the three points. Playing well and keeping a clean sheet comes as an added bonus.
Is it unfair for the fans to assume a team of part-timers should be thrashed by England's stars?
I think Andorra are a team that we are expected to beat. We will respect them, but England have to expect to beat most teams in Europe and, at least, match nations like Italy and Holland.
People say there are no easy games in international football any more. England seem set on proving that correct...
Again, I wouldn't say there are easy matches. But there are some teams you expect to beat and know you should beat without any excuses.
The last visit to Andorra, under Steve McClaren, ended in a cacophony of boos. What did you make of that night?
I think if the atmosphere's bad, you have to try and ignore the crowd. Professional players have all experienced that and it's normally only a small section of the crowd that gives the team a bad time.
The fans have barracked you personally before. Is there anything you can do about that?
When I put on my Chelsea or England shirts, I can honestly say I always give 100 per cent. That's all I can do and hope the fans appreciate that.
England travel to Croatia the following Wednesday. Given England's form, how are you going to beat them?
We need to beat Croatia by performing to the best of our ability. We know we can beat anyone on our day, so we just have to make sure we are all up for it.
Are the team still carrying mental scars from failing to qualify for Euro 2008?
It hurt. No one enjoyed watching Euro 2008 on TV. We have to get over thedisappointment though and we're all looking forward to the World Cup qualifiers now.
Do England "owe" Croatia one - or is it just another game?
If we start looking for revenge, that takes the focus away from our main target: to finish top of the World Cup qualifying group for 2010. First and foremost, England must qualify for every major tournament, without any excuses.

Great win last night without the most over-rated player in world football being there (that would be Gerrard)
