Khan: 'Hatton Fight Would Be Great!'
Posted in Interviews | 10 months ago
Can you believe it's four years since your silver medal in Athens? No, it's absolutely flown by! Watching the Brits in Beijing brought back great memories and I really cherish them. But I've been a professional for three and half years now, had 18 fights and am within touching distance of a world title fight. I wouldn't change a thing.
What advice would you give to gold medal-winner James DeGale? Should he turn pro
now or wait for London 2012?
I'd say just chill out for a bit and bask in the glory. And then in a couple of months when things have settled, look at all the options available.
Is Britain now the No1 pound-for-pound boxing nation?
I guess we are. We have great champions like Ricky Hatton, Joe Calzaghe and David Haye, who are in most of the experts' top 10 pound-for-pound rankings. And there are plenty of good young fighters coming through to follow in their footsteps.
Still hoping to be a world champ before 21?
I'm young, hungry and want a world title belt around my waist. Doesn't every boxer? That's what we are in this business for. Obviously, I've got to listen to people like my promoter Frank Warren, and they will know when the time is right. I'm raring to go!
When are you going up against Ricky Hatton? Ricky's a great fighter and has achieved what I want to achieve in my career. But I'm still coming through, so it would be really disrespectful of me to challenge
him at this stage of my career.
Is that the fight the British public really wants?
If we did fight, it'd be great for the fans. We've both got explosive, styles, but it's a long way off.
Who would win?
Wait and see!
This weekend's opponent, Breidis Prescott, is a KO expert. Should we expect fireworks?
Definitely do not blink! He's unbeaten in 19 fights with 17 knockouts and I'm unbeaten in 18 fights with 14 knockouts. It's got everything for an explosive fight. I'll look at him, box him and if the opening presents itself - then bang!
PUB FACT: At 21, Amir Khan is still 10 months younger than 22-year-old Beijing Olympics star James DeGale
l Amir Khan has signed a new multi-fight deal with Sky Box Office. His first fight will be live, and in high definition, on Saturday 6 September when he faces undefeated Lightweight Breidis Prescott. To order the fight call: 08442 410 888
