FA Cup Special: Exclusive Interviews!

Danny Coles celebrates goal against FulhamBIG MATCH ONE: BRISTOL vs WEST BROM

Bristol Rovers defender Danny Coles on upsets, Cup clichés and Spurs-style benders!

Rovers have got West Brom at home in the Quarter-Finals of the FA Cup. Not a bad draw for you, right?

We want to go as far as we can in this competition. If we didn't draw one of the big clubs like Man United or Chelsea, we wanted to be playing a Championship side at home. As a result, it has given us a realistic chance of progressing to the semis.

Why have so many smaller clubs had such great FA Cup runs this year?

I don't know, really. I think people outside football find it really hard to understand - but it is the beauty of the FA Cup. On the day, if you put in a half-decent performance and the bigger side doesn't perform, you have a chance. And when bigger teams think they can win easily, that's when upsets can happen.

Do you realise that you're potentially two games away from playing in Europe?

I haven't thought about that, to be honest. The only thing I'm thinking about is that I'm 90 minutes away from playing a semi-final at Wembley. When you think you're two games away from qualifying for Europe, it's sort of crazy.

Having been in the League Two Play-Off Final last season, Wembley's like a second home for Rovers now...

A few of the lads will think they're Wembley regulars if we manage to get there again. But we'll just take each game as it comes. It's an old cliché but it's at the back of our minds. The West Brom match is massive; probably the biggest of our careers.

Are you planning any Spurs-style celebratory drunken brawls?

No, we're lovers not fighters, so aren't into all that! But when we beat Southampton, the manager gave us the go ahead to go out. We went out to Java nightclub in Bristol and they gave us the VIP treatment, so we still celebrated in style!

BIG MATCH TWO: BARNSLEY vs CHELSEA

Tykes' Kop-shocking captain Brian Howard talks about his Stamford Bridge heartache

Be honest. Can you beat Chelsea?

Why not? We've already caused one upset and we'll be hoping to do the same again. We went to Anfield and turned over some of the best players in the world. People have talked about the magic of the Cup being dead, but we've proved that it's still very much alive.

OK. So how will you do it?

Having the game at Oakwell is a massive advantage. Our home record is great this season. Nobody gave us a chance at Anfield, but we proved people wrong. Hopefully, we can do the same again.

What will be your tactics?

You just go out there and do your best. It's XI vs XI and hopefully our hard work can make up for the extra quality Chelsea have.

And you've got unfinished business with the Blues, right?

I had four months there when I left Southampton and then Roman Abramovich came in and signed some of the best players in the world. I didn't think I would even get in the reserves, so I had to go. Now it will be nice to prove to them that I'm still good enough.
