Nani: Trickstar Or Clown?
Portuguese dribbler Nani ruffled a few feathers over the weekend when he turned trickstar, juggling the ball during Man Utd's FA Cup clash against bitter rivals Arsenal.
With his team four nil to the good Nani's keepy-uppy showboating led his opponents to accuse him of taking the piss. His Joga skills also earned him a ticking off from the boss.
See For Yourself
Watch Nani's amazing dribble and see if you agree with ZOO Features Editor Richard Innes as he jumps to the defence of the United whiz kid. Or are you on the side of Sports Writer James Ankobia as he slams the fancy winger's antics.
"IF YOU'VE GOT IT, FLAUNT IT"
FOR: Big Rich, ZOO Features Editor
Last time I checked, football was a competitive sport. To me, that means footballers should be doing everything in their power to beat their opponents.
If they're really talented, they might even be able to inflict long-term psychological damage on their biggest rivals. And if they can do that by rubbing their rivals' faces in a thrashing with some strategically-placed ball-juggling, then I salute them.
Until last weekend, I would have bet my house on Sir Alex Ferguson agreeing with me. The man's a winner, after all. Sadly, it looks like I have misunderstood the cantankerous old Glaswegian all these years.
Incredibly, Fergie AGREED with Arsene Wenger's moan that Nani's cheeky keep-up display had "humiliated" his Arsenal side during their 4-0 hammering at Old Trafford.
Well yes, Mr Wenger, your team WERE humiliated. And what exactly is your point? Should there be a rule that says teams can only dominate a match by so much? Maybe we could push it a bit further and make it forbidden for any team to be beaten by more than three goals?
I'm being sarcastic, of course. Arsenal were absolutely appalling at Old Trafford - not least because of their complete lack of desire and work rate - and the fact that Nani had the skill, imagination and sheer balls to demonstrate just how much his team were dicking on them deserves a pat on the back.
He'd probably have preferred one from his manager rather than the Features Editor at ZOO, but hey - SOMEONE should be giving him credit...
"CIRCUS TRICKS BELONG IN THE BIG TOP!"
AGAINST: James Ankobia, ZOO Sports Writer
Sir Alex was right to blast his Ronaldo copycat-youngster Nani for his circus tricks in this weekend's FA Cup clash with Arsenal.
Although funny to see, that type of behaviour is unsporting and disrespectful to his fellow professionals.
It's one thing pulling a trick to go past a player but doing keepy-uppy towards your own goal when your team is 4-0 up is just plain taking the piss!
Nani should count himself lucky that Justin Hoyte and Flamini failed to catch him. Had they chased him down successfully, he could have had no complaints if he'd received a serious kicking.
It's not only the type of thing that can turn a game into a farce, he'd have done his teammates no favours by ending up on the treatment table. So I say save it for the Nike ads, or the community support gigs.
