ZOO Talks To Bianca Bree, Jean-Claude Van Damme's Ass-Kicking Daughter!
Hi Bianca. Your new movie UFO is about an alien invasion, do you reckon you could handle one in real life?
When sh*t hits the fan I'm pretty good, I remain calm. I'd figure it out and stay calm, I wouldn't go crazy and turn on people. I'd try and become friends with them.
Do you believe in aliens?
I've seen some documentaries and have a few friends that do, but I'm kind of in the middle. I don't know, I do think there could be something out there. It's always good to have an imagination, so why not?
Being Jean Claude Van Damme’s daughter were you doing fly kicks before you learnt how to walk?
Haha! I did Tae Kwon Do when I was younger but then I hated it, so I stopped. But I do kickboxing now.
How freaked out did your boyfriend’s get when they found out who your dad was?
I didn't have a lot of boyfriends, but I did have a lot of guy friends. When they'd come over, they'd see photos and ask, “Why have you got pictures of Jean-Claude Van Damme all over your house?” I'd just say "Oh, we're huge fans of him," and leave it at that.
Your dad has a cameo in the film, how did it feel to be working with him again?
It was fun, it's always nice to work with him, especially in fight scenes. He threw me up against a wall in one scene and my back still hurts now! I didn't want to use the protective padding because it was too tight for my jacket but I won’t be doing that again.
Did you play any pranks with him on set?
When we were filming Welcome To The Jungle, the day was running a bit late. I called the producer over, and dad started shouting, "You bring me on set five hours before I'm actually shooting." The producer was like, "I'm so sorry, yes sir, yes sir." Dad turned to me and I was pretending to be on my phone, and he was like, "You over there, you're always on your phone. You never focus." It was too hard to hold in the laughter, the producer didn't know what was going on.
Has he ever done any 'embarrassing dad' things on set?
No, I don't get embarrassed. Even he did something embarrassing, I wouldn't get embarrassed.
Are you keen to distance yourself from the old man, or are you happy to use the Van Damme name to your advantage?
I'm using my middle name 'Bree' to get away from that, but at the same time still learning from him. I go to auditions under the name Bianca Bree and people don't know who I am. Sometimes they look me up on IMDb and realise. I still follow his advise but I want to make it on my own not just because of his name.
So you don’t fancy doing a remake of Bloodsport or Kickboxer then?
No, that would just be following in his footsteps. I'm going for a bit more drama roles. I don't mind action, stuff like Tomb Raider - that's cool for me because I like to do my own stunts. But I'd rather do drama.
Did you enjoy being in the UK during filming for UFO?
I loved hanging out with the crew and cast but I didn’t get much time to explore because I was always working. I struggled with the accents though! I had to get people to repeat themselves three or four times. But by the time I got back to the States I had picked up a little English accent and was having to repeat myself to everyone at home!
UFO is out on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download on 24 December
