ZOO Names Bisping UK's Coolest!

Mike Bisping: UK's Coolest ManBritain's hard nuts are the coolest men of 2008 - it's official! That's the verdict as we unveil our 100 Coolest British Blokes of the Year.

Top of the list for this year is none other than Michael Bisping - Britain's leading UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) fighter. Thousands of you had a think about who's the coolest lad in the land - and Bisping won hands down.

Bisping, 29, from Clitheroe in Lancashire, is Britain's finest export in the UFC and won two huge bouts this year in Birmingham against tough opposition from across the pond. The mixed martial artist is a former light heavyweight champion and has only been defeated once in his illustrious career.

When we told Mike about his win, he said: "I am totally shocked, but honoured to be voted the coolest man in the UK by ZOO readers."

Paddy Power bookies' favourite Lewis Hamilton finished just behind Bisping in second place. Last year's winner Noel Gallagher is still a massive favourite of yours as he finished third ahead of big screen action heroes Jason Statham (4th) and Daniel Craig (5th).

The top 10 is filled by more of Britain's hard cases, with undefeated world champ boxer Joe Calzaghe (6th), adventurer Bear Grylls (7th) and Noel's younger brother Liam Gallagher (8th).

Liverpool's Steven Gerrard (9th) is footie's coolest bloke ahead of Arsenal's wonder kid Theo Walcott (11th), David Beckham (17th) and Wayne Rooney (40th). England skipper John Terry (75th) dropped 61 places from last year's position. Harry Redknapp (44th) was voted Britain's coolest football manager.

Despite being blasted by the BBC, Russell Brand (10th) is Britain's coolest comedian - ahead of James Corden (18th), Russell Howard (20th) and Ricky Gervais (24th).

Following the Gallagher brothers in the world of music are Paul Weller (14th), the Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner (16th), Radiohead's Thom Yorke (22nd) and Simon Cowell (33rd).

The only politician you reckoned was cool is London Mayor Boris Johnson (47th), while the Governor of the Bank of England, Mervyn King (78th), was voted in for keeping a cool head during the global financial crisis.

It was a very un-cool year for Sacha Baron Cohen (86th) who fell 75 places from last year, and Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson (63rd) who is now less cool than his co-presenter James May (21st) and even The Stig (28th).

ZOO Verdict
Our mag ed, Ben Todd, said: "Although most people will be surprised at this year's winner, the result reveals the growing influence that UFC is having on young men in Britain - with the sport now seriously rivalling boxing in the popularity stakes.

"Intriguingly, the poll also suggests a resurgence in respect for hard men, perhaps due to the harsher economic times, and the death of the metrosexual, with Bisping, Calzaghe and Bear Grylls all featuring in the top 10."
