ZOO's Recession Busting Survival Kit!
Watching Telly
If you've got broadband and aren't bothered about watching on an actual telly, you can wipe £139.50 off your yearly expenses. Using BBC iPlayer doesn't require a TV licence and legit web destinations such as joost.com and Blinkbox also feature decent content. However, if you stream TV on certain sites (cough surfthechannel.com cough) you're breaking copyright laws.
Going To The Game
A recent survey calculated the cost of going to a Premier League match - including travel, match ticket, kit, food and drink - at a staggering £106.21. If you don't fancy switching your allegiance - Blackburn's prices start at a tempting £17 - then you can sign up for loyalty programmes such as footballforfree.co.uk, which give you money-off tickets when you spend money on the high street.
Bulk Buying
Need to stock up on booze? You can save around 60 per cent by heading across the Channel. And with £20 ferry fares to France now available, you won't need to fill a lorry to start seeing the savings.
Mobiles
Mobile phone expert Thomas Newton advises haggling when it's time to upgrade to a flash new handset: "The time leading up to Christmas is the busiest period for the major mobile networks, so ring all of them and see if any are prepared to offer you a better deal than their competitors."
Style
Fashion buyer Sam Hill's top tip for tracking down cut-price designer gear is to keep your eyes peeled: "In preparation for the sales, clothes store staff will often put a red or black dot on the label of an item. This is to indicate that it's going to be lowered in price, so you can then return in a couple of days to cash in."
Entertainment
There are plenty of second -hand shops willing to buy old CDs, DVDs and games - Cash Converters and CEX are the biggest. They'll even take phones and laptops.
Cheap Calls
Want to make cheap international calls? Head over to Rebtel's website, input the long-distance number and they'll send you decoy digits to use that will fool your mobile into thinking it's just another local call.
Booze
There's no need to fork out for export lager - Asda Smartprice beer won a taste test on The F Word, beating a premium bottle of Carlsberg. Drink up - it's only 88p for four cans!
Alcohol is a vital commodity for supermarkets, often sold as a "loss leader" - ie without profit on the gamble that shoppers will buy other items too. Check daily at your branch for the best offers.
Online Shopping
You can get last season's clothes at a fraction of the cost at various online retailers and stores. Sometimes, it's literally just a change of colour, but the price difference is huge - often around 75 per cent.
Live Footie
When it comes to watching games on TV - and if spending cash down your local isn't an attractive proposition - there are more than 35 packages to choose from. To view every televised match, you'll need to subscribe to both Sky Sports and Setanta Sports. The regular price is £46.99 a month, but Virgin Media customers can get them both for just £35.99, a saving of £132 a year. And you can always split the cost with a mate.
Downloading Music
Fancy banishing overpriced music? Buying Nokia's 5310 handset from The Carphone Warehouse gives you access to more than two million tracks for a flat fee.
Vouchers
There are loads of special offers available at myvouchercodes.co.uk. Our current favourite is the 20 per cent discount offer at Japanese giants Uniqlo.
