Super Bash IV: The Review!

default

As some of you may be aware, I won tickets to NFL UK's official Superbowl party in London on Sunday night. Having been given the chance to party until 4am at the NFL’s official Super Bowl bash (appropriately titled ‘Super Bash’), I took loads of pictures and loads of videos - so its only fair to share my experiences of the night with the people that made it possible: you, the loyal readers, and the folks at ZOO. Oh, and the videos and exclusive wallpaper of the cheerleaders might just interest you as well... here's the review, don't get too bored, I tried to make it amusing in places. Aren’t I a kind, yet witty, soul? Sort of like a stand-up comic version of Jesus, in a way.

The doors at the place opened at 8pm with the entertainment kicking of at 9pm and it wasn’t until around half 8 that we got in. I had to pick my tickets up from the PR person who was sorting them out for Reebok. The charming Allegra (thanks again for meeting us to hand them over!) arrived just after we did, handed over the tickets and we all went in – we tried to blag the VIP entrance to mingle with the stars but it just wasn’t to be. Though, in saying “wasn’t to be” I really mean, “those people on the door were just far too big for me”. Even so, we were in and the place was lively from the start.

In the entrance halls were hundreds of gaming pros (read: nerds), all playing Madden 2007, and all vying to win the UK leg of the world tournament, with the aim for a prize trip to Hawaii to play in the world finals. Who won? Don’t ask me: I was too busy finding the bar, and here starteth our first problem of the evening…

We made our way into the main screening room: a massive hall decked up with giant Indianapolis Colts and Chicago Bears posters, plus three cinema-sized HD screens, for ultimate viewing of the Bowl, opposite a 10-row deep stadium-style seating stand erected just for the event – the length of which spanned the entire room. Despite this, the seats only catered for about half the spectators: the place was full to the brim. Check out the video of the place below:

In the search for our first beer of the evening, we were drawn to the bottle stands which were moving around the floors. £3 for a 330ml bottle of Coors!

“That’s £3”, said the woman serving me
“Coor blimey!”, I said, in the full knowledge of the pun I had just made
“I’m funny, I should write that down”, my brain thought

Once the first plastic bottle had been easily dispatched, we found the bar and were greeted with £3 for a pint, a much more respectable price. I couldn’t help but feel a little mugged at my bottle experience just moments earlier, but (in a sad way) my woeful pun made up for it – a little bit.

The entertainment then kicked off – our compere for the evening was MTV and Radio 1’s Trevor Nelson. After a bit of an intro and a few gags, we were showed a couple of clips from his time out in New Orleans with Saints football team. But it wasn’t until after this that the entertainment really started. It was time for the Miami Dolphins cheerleaders…

“It’s time for the Miami Dolphins cheerleaders!” said Nelson, appropriately.

Cue a defeaning “wooooooooo!” from the many wannabe Americans in the crowd (who were probably expecting a keg party, just for the authentic experience). Out came the cheerleaders and this is my video of their first of two performances:

Hot hot hot, despite being a little further away than ideal. A quality performance from the band ‘The Cuban Brothers’ followed – catchy party tunes and a stand-up-esque show from the front man; “Is no problem for me, is no problem for you”. Very amusing and it got people on their feet dancing/wobbling their stomachs in an effort to “dance”. I was the latter.

A notable performance from the crowd came when Mayor Ken Livingston came on stage along with the NFL UK Commissioner to talk about the game that’s coming to Wembley in the October of this year (ticket info here). A chorus of booing for Red Ken greeted him including a few… no, make that countless… shouts of “wanker” and the like. The video of which you can see below:

He did get a few cheers though after he bigged up the NFL and explained how he “will close Oxford Street the day of the NFL game at Wembley” and decorate London “to welcome our NFL friends and fans”. Trevor Nelson defended him a bit later but that did nothing to please the crowd!

Before long though it was time for the second cheerleaders performance and, having wormed my way to the front of the crowd, I managed to grab the second of the glorious performances on video. The music was playing up for them at the start though, so that’s why the don’t start dancing for a little while in the clip. Don’t worry though, its worth it once it does kick in! Just ogle their behinds until they get moving. It eases the boredom (sort of).

After this, the cheerleaders got changed from their miniscule outfits and mingled with us peasants on the floor – of course, I took this as an opportunity to get my ugly mug in a couple of snaps with them…

The ‘Brand New Heavies’ then gave a rousing performance before the screens went live to Miami and it wasn’t long before the game kicked off. I’m not one to give much of a review on the game, there’s plenty of sites just for that, but it certainly was a cracker. The opening touchdown came in the first 10 seconds and the place erupted: its fair to say I was all the beerier – certainly on my clothes – as pints went flying. Similar reactions greeted each touchdown, and it didn’t ease up even though they were going through the 3am barrier. I was backing the Bears all night but it wasn’t to be as they went down 29-17 to the Colts – which also meant a lost my bet with my mate who accompanied me on the second ticket.

The time had just past 4am and it was time to leave – gutting as it was for my mate who had to leave the very attractive barmaid he spent a chunk of the night talking to. He got a staff t-shirt for his endeavours all the same, though!

Having been told to leave the road cones alone that we kept trying to take (as you do on a big night out), we eventually got the night bus back to Victoria station and had to wait there for about an hour for the first tubes back to North Greenwich. My mate used this as an opportunity to grab an hour's kip whereas I just stayed about being a little bored and chatting to a few other fellas that went. After my mate decided to play "lets try and be sick at every tube station on the way home" on his own, I eventually got back home shortly before 7am - where I had time to have a bath and get dressed for school. So I had then had a day at school to contend with without a single minute's sleep! I was absolutely dead and don't remember the end of my last lesson of the day (I just hope my 'zzzzz' in the corner wasn't putting the teacher off!). Got back home yesterday at 5pm after school: just enough time for dinner before a big 12hr sleep last night. Feeling much better today. But it was definitely well worth it. And if you want free wallpaper of the cheerleaders' finest assets, check below.

Finally, I’d like to again thank ZOO for the tickets and Allegra for meeting me at the event to hand them over. Top people, all of you.

Thanks for a quality, quality night. Here’s to Super Bash V next year!
