"Dwain Faces Big Challenge!"
We'll I've got to start this week by talking about the Dwain Chambers story.
It's certainly dominated all the headlines and been a major talking point for the much of the sports media.
I must admit that when I first heard about it I thought it was a wind-up and I wasn't sure what was happening
But then I talked to Castleford's Scott Moore who is a good mate of mine and he confirmed it was true. I've got to say I was shocked.
Many people have voiced their opinions and I think it is important to stress that while pure explosive speed can be a great asset in Rugby League there's so much more to our game than just that.
Dwain is certainly facing a big challenge!
There's the core skills of catching, passing, tackling and kicking to learn. Any player also needs to understand principles of attack and defence, team play, evasion and lines of running - just to mention a few things.
I've been asked how I would advise Dwain Chambers to progress in the sport and although I'm still learning the game myself I would say that it's crucial that he asks lo ts of questions and constantly tries to think about the game.
I would tell him to stay close to the other wingers in the Tigers squad. Pick their brains and really try to get a good understanding of wing play and Rugby League in general. It's certainly a big mental challenge as well as physical one.
The wing is a hard position to play in and there is a lot to think about. Dwain will have to work especially hard on positioning and awareness in defence as well as working with his centre partner.
I think he will get plenty of help from the rest of Castleford squad though because all Rugby League professionals are good guys and will do their best to help people who are making an honest effort. It will be interesting to see how things develop from here.
In terms of engage Super League generally, a lot of supporters have been talking about the wet weather and boggy grounds recently. Although there's been a fair bit of rain about I actually think the standard of the games has stayed high.
I won't deny it is tough going in the mud but all teams in the competition have been showing some great skill and completion rates have been high generally.
All that is a credit to all the players and coaches without doubt.
Saying that I do hope it dries up soon and we can ALL stop wearing wellies to training!!!
